Hymns

Hymns are a musical genre most accepted by our Church, Apostolic Faith Mission In Zimbabwe. They are songs that are rich in Praises, Worship, Exhortations, etc. Such Praise Leaders as Baba Chiwaridzo are known for singing such songs at Rufaro Conferences. In the contemporary however, from the writer's research, youths are more interested in genres like ones Joyous Celebration of RSA offers or Hillsong types. Some assert that we can modify the Hymns to suit our modern styles of beat. What do you think?

  1. if get more people who can lead hyms like him especially from the younger generation, the better. Ikanatsoimbwa hym unonatsonzwa kuti ndiripagotekwa! I observed also those who sing at Rufaro are torn apart between making the crowd dance and prayerfully sing. many a time have witnessed a worship song being converted into jive song on stage to please the pipo..One year Mt Camel sang that I felt my spirit uplifted and saw tears in the eyes of many pipo arnd me, as they were singing for the lord not pipo in tht event

  2. Hymns are so rich in spiritual messages, just like the Hillsong songs which one sings from the heart. However when it is time to use such songs for worship, we are unfortunately obsessed with having a fast rhythm which takes away the essence of worship where one has to be sober and really feel what they are singing. The likes of Chiwaridzo unfortunately seem to be overtaken by emotion and make noise instead of being calm and simply have the music come from within.

We need the praise and worship team to be trained to be worshipers.

  3. I think the praise and worship is good, there is nothing wrong with the hymns. the problem is that we are trying so hard to be someone else. we are AFM so we worship and praise like AFM..why should we sing like hillsong or like joyous when thats not even who we are. we shouldnt try to fit in to something, but should stand out for who we are. For one to like the hymns you should know what they mean its not about the beat, rythmn or voice its about the message we want to bring out of the song and who we are singing for. FYI: worship and praise is for the lord alone, not for the people in the crowd. We are that generation which is to bring back the church in what it really is not try to be another church.

  4. Thank you for the discussion, in musical terms the church now needs a musical identity which we never had for long. I am happy to pronounce the upcoming National Praise and Worship team album to be launched on 21 November 2015. We will commence digital sales on itunes and selected stores nation wide. I think the worship songs address the issues at hand and hope you enjoy the album.
